A Month in Review + September Goals

September 8, 2016

Checking back in to let you know that YES, I’m still here!  August turned out to be one busy month, and after feeling a tad overwhelmed I decided to give myself a much needed blogging vacation.  Do you ever try to hold on so tight to something with the fear that you’ll lose it that you end up resenting it?  I had built up this fear in my head that blogging had to be ALL or NOTHING, but guess what?  Once I allowed myself to take a break (I gave myself a full month), I remembered why I love blogging in the first place, and slowly became excited to begin again!  I guess Elsa was right… sometimes you gotta #LetItGo 😉

So, some recaps from this month?

Bachelorette Party // My sister Sarah and I planned and hosted our sister Cait’s bachelorette party in Des Moines – yay!  I’ll be sharing a full post about this trip next week, so hang tight for more details!  Also, note to self: Please do not attempt to make a round-trip drive to Des Moines over a weekend ever again. That is all!

Aspen // I took a little road trip to Aspen to explore the exclusive ski resort town and check out some exquisite wedding venues.  The St. Regis Aspen Resort, The Little Nell, T-Lazy 7 Ranch and Hotel Jerome each had such unique styles.  With Aspen Mountain or the famous Maroon Bells as your backdrop, you really can’t go wrong!

Fine Art Fairytale // I do a little happy dance every time I think of the recent fine art fairytale wedding editorial I collaborated on earlier this month with my friend and talented photographer Emily Sacco!  See below for some sneak peeks from her… more to come from a very talented team!

Balayage // I’ve never been very bold with my hairstyles, but have been itching to try something new and have my heart set on a beautiful balayage look for Fall.  I’m going to to go darker up top close to my natural color (think dark strawberry blond) + move lighter toward the ends with hand-painted subtle highlights… stay tuned!  (And click here to learn more and see if this look could work for you too.)

September Goals

Drink at home.

I’m getting better, but I still cringe at the amount of money I spend on fancy lattes (guilty!).  This Fall I’d love to learn how to make my own homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte, and make it often.  Both of these recipes look promising – here + here.

Even though I’ve lived in my apartment for almost 2 years, I’ve dropped the ball on really decorating it to feel like home.  Does anyone else struggle with this?  I always think that an apartment is so temporary so I don’t want to go all out with decor, but at the same time I really want to make the space my own.  I’ve decided it’s time to put some serious thought into what I want my apartment to look + feel like.

See the leaves.

Fall foliage tours are somewhat of a sport in Colorado.  I’m marking my calendar for a day trip up to Breckenridge and Aspen to see the leaves at their finest.  Ahh, I cannot wait!

What are your goals for this month?

My Morning Happy Hour Routine

July 14, 2016

Morning Routine

“Remember to take care of yourself.  You can’t pour from an empty cup.” ~ Toby Mac

Do you have a set morning routine?  One of the hardest things for me about transitioning from a corporate job into starting a business from home has been re-establishing a schedule for myself.  As a wedding planner, I love that every day is completely different  – from meeting with new vendors, taking beautiful venue tours and of course working with new couples.  The problem is that I’ve been so excited to hustle and get out there that I lost my sense of grounding.  Life felt completely chaotic.

Last month I had the opportunity to completely remove myself from the situation.  I went to Iowa to visit my family for a little vacation and during that time away I was able to self evaluate.  First of all, spending time with my family always points me back in the right direction because they remind me of who I am at my core.  And secondly, it was nice to take a break completely from work and get revitalized.

When I returned home to Denver I was sure of one thing – I needed some consistency in my life.  Since mornings are my absolute favorite time of day (I love fresh starts and the uncertainty of the day ahead), I decided to put together a regular routine to get me going.  It’s definitely a work in progress, but here is what I’ve been doing in the last month that has made a huge difference in 1) my stress level, 2) my productivity, 3) my self confidence and 4) my faith.

My AM Happy Hour Routine

(…because who says happy hours have to be at 5 o’clock 😉 )

*Wake up around 6:00 or 6:30 am.

*Feed my cats and make coffee (pretty sure my Kerig is my favorite household appliance).

*Sit out on the porch (I love getting fresh air first thing) and read through a devotional or motivational book.  Sometimes I’ll light a candle for ambiance (this Rose Bouquet scented candle from Target is lovely!).  A few of my favorites items to read as of late are:

Jesus Calling

She Reads Truth

A Morning Prayer

Thrive by Arianna Huffington

The Best Yes by Lysa TerKeurst

*Reflect, meditate and/or pray about whatever I read that day, and also pray for my family, friends and business.

*Journal for 5-10 minutes (this is so hard for me, but when I actually do it I feel better about life).

*Make breakfast and enjoy it at the kitchen table or on the porch.  I’ve realized that I really love cooking in the morning.  Lately I’ve been making eggs sunny side up with sautéed veggies, bacon or an english muffin and berries.

Being Intentional

This entire routine takes anywhere from a half hour to a full hour, depending on the day.  Afterward sometimes I’ll work out or just go ahead and put on some make up and get dressed and ready for the day.

Something I realized is that sticking to a routine is super intentional.  It’s hard to set aside an extra hour every morning  but I know the difference it makes for me and that makes it totally worth it!

How do you start your day?  Do you have a happy hour of your own that grounds you and reminds you of your purpose/goals?  Comment below!

Happy Monday friends!  I’m sorry that I’ve been MIA this past week.  Truthfully, I ended up taking a much needed vacation to visit my sisters and parents in Iowa for a bit and do a little detox on blogging and work in general.  I cannot tell you how big of a difference it made!  When I returned home this past weekend, I felt completely refreshed and ready to get back at it – woot!

One thing that I’ve really been struggling with lately is how to use my time more wisely.  In terms of blogging, I realized that I have been stretching myself thin trying to keep up with sharing three well thought out, curated and inspiring posts each week.  Especially during the last couple months as I’ve been really trying to focus in on and build my wedding planning business, I have felt that some of the content I’ve been putting out here has not truly been my best (which is the worst feeling!).  So what’s the solution?  It’s time for some much needed changes!

In order to be able to create better, more in depth, raw posts that really resonate with YOU (my lovely readers), I will now be posting once a week on Thursdays.

Blogging has been such an exciting and challenging journey so far, and I’m so thankful to everyone who has followed along.  I hope that you continue to check in with me here on Ladyplanner, as I continue to share ideas, thoughts and inspiration for how we can create those meaningful “mini events” that add a bit of extraordinary to our day-to-day lives.  Please share any topics that you’re interested in below!
